North York, Toronto-Area Breast Reconstruction – An Uplifting Option for Cancer Survivors

Dr. Sean Brian Rice finds that giving women who have lost breasts to cancer the opportunity to once again enjoy having full, shapely female breasts is one of the most rewarding aspects of his career. Many female cancer patients in the North York and Toronto area visit our practice to undergo breast reconstruction surgery, an uplifting and important step on their long road to recovery. Breast reconstruction surgery uses the patient’s own skin and tissue, or a combination of tissue expanders and implants, to create natural-looking breasts or to balance out the appearance of a missing breast. The procedure is most often considered a medically necessary surgical procedure that is covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan.

TRAM Flap Breast Reconstruction

Dr. Sean Brian Rice, whose practice serves patients throughout the North York and Toronto area, performs TRAM flap breast reconstruction. Using tissue from the transverse rectus abdominis muscle, located in the lower abdomen between the waist and the pubic bone, Dr. Rice can fashion natural-looking breasts that mimic the look and feel of real breast tissue.

In the procedure, an oval-shaped section of fat, muscle, and skin tissue is removed from the area around the lower abdomen, then shaped to form a natural-looking breast and stitched into place inside the patient’s chest. While it is possible to use a TRAM flap procedure for a double breast reconstruction, there must be sufficient abdominal tissue available to create two whole new breasts.

TRAM flap breast reconstruction is commonly used for women who have excess belly fat or an abdominal area that has been stretched out by pregnancy. One fringe benefit of this type of breast reconstruction surgery is that, in the process, the patient ends up with a slimming tummy tuck as a result of the removal of the muscle and tissue.

Breast Reconstruction with Implants

Another option for breast reconstruction is to use a combination of tissue expanders to stretch the skin and then replace the breasts with an anatomical cohesive gel implant. This is a procedure best suited for women for whom the TRAM flap breast reconstruction technique is not an option.
